Living healthily together
Hygiene in accommodationWhen lots of people live together in a confined space – such as shared accommodation – hygiene is particularly important. It helps to prevent illness and creates a good atmosphere. It also shows respect: for yourself and the people around you.
In our video, you will learn what is important in everyday life if you want to stay clean, healthy and safe – and how you can help everyone feel more comfortable.
Clean hands – the best protection
Washing your hands is a simple and very effective way to stay healthy. You should wash your hands regularly with soap and water – before eating, after using the toilet, when you come in from outside, after coughing or sneezing, and also after changing a baby's nappy. It only takes about 20 seconds – but it protects you and others. If there is no water nearby, a disinfectant hand gel will also help. It is also important to dry your hands thoroughly afterwards.

Cough and sneeze with consideration
If you need to cough or sneeze, it is best to do so into the crook of your arm or into a handkerchief. Throw the handkerchief straight into the bin afterwards – and wash your hands again. This will help prevent viruses from spreading.
Disposing of rubbish – but please do it properly
In Germany, it is common practice to separate rubbish – for example, into paper, plastic, organic waste and residual waste. This separation helps to reuse or dispose of rubbish properly. When paper and plastic are collected separately, they can be used to make new products later on. This saves energy, conserves resources and protects the environment.
Many things that end up in the rubbish can be recycled – but only if they end up in the right bin. That's why it's important to separate your rubbish. Even outside, rubbish should always be thrown into the designated bins. It makes life more pleasant for everyone when paths, courtyards and common areas remain clean.
If you are unsure which bin something belongs in, ask – there are often coloured bins or signs to help you.
Consideration in the bathroom
Bathrooms are often shared in accommodation. This makes it all the more important to keep them clean. It is best to wear slippers in the shower and use your own toiletries – towels, soap, toothbrush, comb, razor – and not share these items with anyone else. You should wash your underwear, socks, towels and bed linen regularly, preferably at a high temperature. Your sleeping area should also be clean and tidy.
Clean and safe in the kitchen
The kitchen is an important place – and there are a few simple rules to follow: Always wash your hands before cooking. Raw meat should not come into contact with bread, fruit or other foods. Cook meat thoroughly and put leftovers in the fridge as soon as possible – preferably within two hours. Think of others too: Leaving the area clean after cooking ensures that the next person can feel safe.
Drinking water – safe from the tap
Tap water is drinkable in Germany. It is checked regularly and can be used without hesitation. If the smell, taste or appearance of the water seems strange to you, you should not drink it and, if possible, tell the social workers in the building.
If parasites appear
In cramped living conditions, lice, scabies or bedbugs can spread. This is unpleasant, but nothing to be ashamed of. If you notice itching, bite marks or small insects, it is important to take action as quickly as possible. Early treatment makes everything easier – and prevents others from being affected as well.
Recognising illness – and being considerate
If you feel ill – for example, with a fever, diarrhoea, cough or a noticeable rash – you should keep your distance from others until you feel better. consideration protects the community.
If you need medical assistance outside of office hours, you can reach the medical on-call service by calling 116 117. In acute emergencies, such as breathing difficulties or severe pain, dial 112.
Hygiene for women, girls and babies
Sanitary towels and tampons are usually available for women and girls. These should be disposed of in the designated waste bins – not in the toilet, as this will cause blockages. Nappies should also be disposed of in special waste bins. It is important to wash your hands thoroughly after every nappy change.
Vaccinations – protection for you and others
Vaccinations protect against serious diseases such as measles and whooping cough. In the United Kingdom, certain vaccinations are recommended for children and adults. If you want to know whether you are missing any, you can consult a doctor or ask at the health centre.
Hygiene is a responsibility – for you and everyone else
Hygiene is a responsibility – for you and everyone else
Hygiene is not just a private matter. It is part of living together. It ensures that everyone can feel safe, comfortable and respected. Whether it's washing your hands, separating rubbish or cleaning communal areas – when everyone gets involved, life becomes better for everyone.
And even if some things are new or unfamiliar, there's no need to be embarrassed if you have questions. It's perfectly okay not to know something or to feel unsure.
