What does SGBV mean?
Get help-Live safelySGBV is the abbreviation for sexual and gender-based violence.
This form of violence is directed against people because of their gender, sexual orientation or social role.
What makes it special is that SGBV is not always visible. It can take many forms – physical, sexual, emotional or financial.
Typical forms of SGBV are:
- Physical violence: beating, kicking, locking up, threats
- Sexualised violence: rape, unwanted touching, sexual harassment, forced marriage
- Psychological violence: insults, intimidation, control, isolation, threats
- Economic violence: control over money, forcing financial dependence, denying access to education or work
This violence is often perpetrated by people who are supposed to provide protection: partners, family members, cohabitants or authority figures.
Important to know:
- SGBV is prohibited in Germany.
- No one has the right to hurt you.
- Violence is never your fault.
- You have the right to protection – regardless of where you come from or what your residence status is.
- Help is always confidential, anonymous and free of charge
Your rights in Germany
In Germany, the following applies:
All people have the right to live in safety, dignity and respect.
It is prohibited to:
- Hit children
- Abuse partners
- Control others through violence
The police also take this issue very seriously. In emergencies, you can call 110 at any time – without fear of punishment or deportation.

- Helpline for violence against women: 08000 116 016
- Helpline for violence against men: 0800 123 9900
- Advice and help from: social workers, youth welfare offices (Jugendamt), doctors, specialised counselling centres
- On site: Many services are also available directly in accommodation facilities or in your neighbourhood.
